Privacy
Walkman has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no cookies, and it has no server of its own that receives your data. The site is static files on Netlify; the map, routing and search run in your browser.
Stays on your device
- Your GPS position, routes, favourites, Home/Work, recent places, stats, collected tags, settings and language (browser localStorage).
- Your runs with their GPS tracks and cached map data (IndexedDB in the browser).
- Your Nostr key for leaderboards (localStorage). Clear the site's data in your browser to delete all of this.
Sent to other services — only what they need
- Map tiles from OpenFreeMap: the requests show which area you look at, and your IP address.
- Map details (speed limits, transit, opening hours, chargers) from public Overpass API servers — overpass-api.de, overpass.private.coffee and maps.mail.ru: the request contains a grid cell of about 4 km around the area, not your exact position.
- Wikipedia (place cards, city stories): the name and approximate location of the place or city.
- Hosting by Netlify, which serves the site files and sees your IP address like any web server.
Only when you choose to
- Publishing a run to the leaderboard sends distance, time, pace, km splits, the city and your chosen name to public Nostr relays. In Tashkent it also sends km per each of the 12 districts. The GPS track is never published. Published runs are public and cannot be reliably deleted.
- Group runs share your live position, name, distance and pace with the people who joined the same room code, peer-to-peer. Connecting uses Nostr relays and STUN servers (Google, Cloudflare), which see your IP address.
- Share links contain the coordinates of the destination (and the start, only if you set one) — whoever you send the link to sees them.
- "Edit on OpenStreetMap" / "Report" open openstreetmap.org in a new tab.
